To do this, you would have to use ADE (Adobe Digital Editions) which would use the same method linked and explained above for library books. Kindles do not allow you to do this as you would only be able to sideload drm-free content. These could be from libraries, publishers, other platforms like Google play books. Just make sure all your epubs are converted to azw3 or mobi since kindles don’t read epub! Also they have to be drm-free.Ī) The 1st is to plug in your Kobo and directly cut and paste the books onto the drive (Kobo does read epubs).ī) The 2nd is to use r/Calibre to transfer your books over.Ĭ) The 3rd is by sending it to your own email and downloading it from your browser (I don’t know if this is also possible on kindle).ĭ) as previously mentioned, Kobo also allows you to sideload drm-protected epubs and pdfs. acsm file provided by your library (that is the file type you get when you click ‘download book/epub’ on the platform which is essentially a file that activates and downloads the drm-protected epub), then just send it over to your device.Ī) The 1st is to email books to the device (each device is assigned an email address).ī) The 2nd way is to directly copy/paste the books onto the device once you plug it in (it will appear as a drive).Ĭ) The 3rd method is to use a software called r/Calibre to send to your device either when it’s plugged in or via email if you set it up through the wizard. Essentially you have to download a software called Adobe Digital Editions, authorize your computer, then plug in your Kobo and authorize the device, download the. Kobos are useful if your library uses overdrive and is in Germany or if they use another program that would allow you to download the epub (Hoopla, for example, does not allow this as it requires you to use the app to read on). The US is also one of the countries where Overdrive integration works on the Kobo (so you would log in with your library card and pin if overdrive is the platform your library uses and you can browse and borrow books directly on the device as long as the book is available on the Kobo store). You can do this by borrowing a book on the Overdrive app/ Libby app (my preferred way), or the library’s overdrive website, then clicking ‘send to kindle’ as the way to read the book. If they use Overdrive and your library is a US based library, you can use your Kindle to read your library books (as long as it’s a book also available on the kindle store). If you have a library card, go on the library’s website and find out which platform they use for ebooks (common ones used are Overdrive, BorrowBox, 3m Cloudlibrary, Hoopla). Ok so I’m a big advocate on borrowing library books (they’re free!): Really has more to do with if you’re bothered to go through the de-drm process if you wish to continue purchasing on kindle but plan to go with Kobo, which platform has more books you’re interested in, what shape of the device you like better, and whether you plan on getting access to non-overdrive library books/ German overdrive books/ books directly from publishers or other platforms like google play books that would necessitate sideloading via Adobe Digital Editions. Kindle has a larger selection of ebooks and if you’re a KU member would be useful. The paperwhite is more portable as it has a more compact design, while the Libra 2 has better ergonomics. Here’s a link to a comparison review of the Libra 2 and Paperwhite 5. If you’d like the physical page turn buttons/shape of the device, and to maybe move away from Amazon, or would be willing to go through the drm-stripping process then consider the Kobo. Otherwise you can strip drm (see the FAQs on this subreddit for instructions). If you already have a lot of kindle books, you could just get a kindle. Discussion of DRM removal is allowed for books you have purchased legally but please note that legal requirements for DRM vary by region.
